Re: My Cities, 2008Wow, that is quite a list. I am going to track 2009, thank you for the inspiration. I must work at going new/better places or my list is going to be littered with places I have been a lot. Re: My Cities, 2008Wow, that's a lot of destinations. My list for 2008 only include Swedish cities - the first year since high school I haven't traveled abroad at all. But perhaps I needed the break.
As for your 2009 list, just go to the places you've always wanted to see but never have gotten around to visiting. Re: My Cities, 20081.) you are a crazy man 2.) West Africa, definitely. otherwise, i am partial to and could happily vicariously visit chicago, seattle, or yellowstone. or the appalachian trail. alaska. montreal. vancouver. homey truckee. Re: My Cities, 2008Start tracking now for next year!
Istanbul is on the list, unsure if it will happen this year. Austin will be in March; I'd be surprised if I didn't go to Seattle at some point this year. Ah, too many ideas... Re: My Cities, 2008I don't do a good enough job keeping track of the specific cities I've visited. The best I've got is US states and countries. Off the top of my head some of the most memorable were Delhi, Bangalore, Agra, a number of cities across Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, and Texas...
Where should you go in 2009?
I always recommend my favorite city in the world, Istanbul. The Philippines is really an adventure especially outside of Manila. In the States, Austin and Seattle pop to mind for their blend of nature, uniqueness, and proximity to other interesting cities! Re: My Cities, 2008I don't know, but that does sound crazy. Who would want to spend the night in the middle of the woods in Norther PA in the middle of winter. I wouldn't take their advice anymore!
Honestly, that is one of my all-time favorite trips. Come to think of it, only a couple of my trips are not in my all-time fav's.
My list is only 14 so far for 08. I need to put together a year by year list. Re: My Cities, 2008Ok, so it's not a city; but it is a place I spent the night... multiple nights in fact, roped into some crazy winter camping trip... who convinced me to do that? :) Re: My Cities, 2008Quehanna Wild Area is a city? Re: Reflection, Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe, CaliforniaI stagger down the slopes, skidding on everything but my skis; which means no, I don't ski... Re: Reflection, Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe, Californiadid you ski? it's breathtaking. Re: On and off, Hoover Dam, NevadaI'm just kidding, in a way, prodding. I personally have no qualms with using whatever tools we have at our disposal.
"Pure" is a fairly ephemeral notion in any case; we're continually re-writing the standards, definitions and examples of what "pure" (or "right", or "wrong") throughout time.
I use a Canon DSLR, shoot everything in RAW in color, and develop in Photoshop, usually developing a couple different versions to see what if I can replicate the ideas in my mind. Re: On and off, Hoover Dam, Nevadadoes it matter in terms of purity or being a purist? hell no. i just want to know the best methods for duplicating this (copying you). medium format? stitching?
photoshop, like filters and lenses is another means to an end, creating a painting with light. seeing something in your mind and actualizing it. Re: On and off, Hoover Dam, NevadaI'll tell you, but first, let me ask: does it matter?
And once we combine a camera and Photoshop, how do we determine the impact of each tool for creation? Re: On and off, Hoover Dam, Nevadawhat are you shooting with? Re: This year did not end up as I thought it wouldI'm looking forward to hearing more about your projects; so many interesting ideas and projects going on around the world. What's changed is that we can know learn from so many more of them; the challenge is learning how to tie these projects, best practices and people together.
It's going to be fun for all of us to figure it out :) Re: This year did not end up as I thought it wouldwhat is inevitable? The best views often come from the outside looking in; however, it's hard to make money without being on the inside. That's a larger test, and a greater opportunity for economic organization. Always enjoy hearing your views and learning from you... Re: I thought I would hate Reno, but I was wrongPlaces are always about the people... and I'm hoping to meet more characters there soon :) Re: I thought I would hate Reno, but I was wrongThat line could probably launch a better novel than my current half-unwritten novels :)
The contrast between glitz and real, peeling off the various facades of life, is always interesting. I wonder if back in the day cave art and mineral stains were "glitzy" in contrast to the normal unadorned rocks, mountains and landscapes.
What do we perceive as glitzy today that will be eclipsed in the future? Re: This year did not end up as I thought it wouldThe best part is that not only do things usually not end as we planned, it's usually better that way :) Re: This year did not end up as I thought it wouldThanks! And hopefully I'll see you again in Houston this year... Re: Cool, Los Angeles, CaliforniaDefinitely not a joke!
Ah, there are those types of salons everywhere in the world, pretentiousness is not restricted to LA. All of that said, this place is cool, not pretentious, and treat people well. I forget the name of the place, in the Silver Lake neighborhood... Re: Do you fall asleep reading on the computer? Is the question the best way to fix falling asleep while working on the computer, or the best way to get things done while working on the computer? Two very different answers :) Re: I thought I would hate Reno, but I was wrongIt is a town full of characters, for sure--cowboys, crack addicts, entrepreneurs, explorers. Glad you picked up on that vibe. I can't quite put my finger on the Reno zeitgeist, either, but there is a kind of rough and tumble to the culture that's unpretentious and fun to be around.
Happy New Year!
(keep an eye out for the next Gamechangers post...you'll like it.) Re: Do you fall asleep reading on the computer?I always get sleepy when I first started on this computer. It makes me so angry because I can't get anything done, especially when I have to do a 500 wrd paper. What is the best way to fix this problem Re: This year did not end up as I thought it wouldSounds like a great year, Taylor. May 2009 be as eventful and even better for you!
